Bachelor of Divinity (B.D.) Program

The program of study set forth for the Bachelor of Divinity (B.D.) degree is designed to train young men and women for the varied ministries of the church such as pastoral and teaching ministry, missionary service, advanced study in the field of theology and related disciplines and other forms of Christian service. This is a four-year residential program, which involves rigorous study and discipline.
Academic Qualification (for the four-year B.D. program)
- Bachelor degree from a recognized University/College in any discipline (B.A., B.Sc., B. Com. etc.)
OR
- Bachelor of Theology (B.Th.) degree from the Serampore University. B.Th. graduates with an average grade of B– or above and have completed a minimum of two years practical ministry may be exempted from the courses offered in the first two years of the program, provided that they enter the program with satisfactory grades in the prerequisite courses and with a minimum grade of B– in each of the non-credit courses. However, those candidates who wish to undertake advanced courses in Greek and Hebrew shall be admitted only to the second year of the program. B. Th. graduates with an average grade less than B– shall be required to do the three years program. Exemptions may be granted for the prerequisite and non-credit courses, provided that they have satisfactory/required grades for those courses.
- An applicant without a secular degree or a recognized B. Th. and has passed the Mature Candidate’s Examination from the Serampore University. A mature candidate is defined as one who is at least twenty-five years of age and has passed the tenth standard and was prevented for special reasons from pursuing his/her secular studies, has the provision of appearing for the Mature Candidate’s Examination from the Serampore University. Academic Qualification (for the five-yearB.D. program)
- Applicant who has successfully completed +2 or equivalent with the eligibility to enroll for Intermediate/Higher Secondary/Pre-University/Pre-Degree Course.
- Alternatively, a candidate who has passed Class X with the eligibility to enroll for Intermediate/Higher Secondary/Pre-University/Pre-Degree Course and has done two years of further study in a theological or secular institution with experience in Christian ministry or any public service is also eligible to apply.
- The applicant should have completed 18 years of age on or before 1st July of the year of admission.
Remedial English
If the Admission Committee feels that there are some applicants, despite the fact that they sustain the entrance examination in English, need to improve their English language skills before they are introduced to the study of Greek or Hebrew, they shall be required to successfully complete a six-week Remedial English course during the Summer.
Thesis
Candidates maintaining an average grade of B or above shall be required to write a thesis of 10,000 to 12,000 words. The thesis will have the value of two full optional courses. Those who maintain an average grade of B shall have the option to write a thesis or do two full optional courses. All the others shall do two full optional courses instead of the thesis.
